Akihito (b. 1933) was the 125th Emperor of Japan, and the first to rise to power during the era in which Japanese Emperors had no power after his father Hirohito's reducation to a symbolic monarch after the end of WWII in 1945. He became Emperor on January 7, 1989 and abdicated on April 30, 2019.
