Question:

Why is it important for scientists to have a uniform set of units for measurements? In the past, these were always linked to artifacts (like rods or bars of a given length for the meter), but more recently there has been a move to other methods to describe these units (for instance the distance traveled by light in a given period of time to delineate the meter). Why has this move been made?

Measurements:

Measurements are defined as the sets of observations that are made in order to reduce the uncertainty in results. The three most important types of measurements are the SI units, US Customary System, and the British imperial system.

Answer and Explanation: 1

It is important for scientists to have a uniform set of units for the measurement in order to reduce the confusion which might happen with the different system of measurement. The uniform sets of units make it further easier to compare the measurements that are taken by different persons.

At present, there has been a move to other methods to describe these units because this move allowed scientists to compare the data more efficiently. It also allowed the scientists to communicate with each other with respect to their results. This is also useful in making or judgement more accurate and more reliable. There should be a common set of units for everybody. This move has also been accepted successfully.
