Hematocrit is the percentage of the total blood volume occupied by red blood cells. The normal range of hematocrit for female adults is 38-46% and 40-54% in adult males. Testosterone stimulates the synthesis of erythropoietin (EPO), which is the hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells. Males produce more testosterone than females, thus produce more red blood cells through erythropoiesis.
