El Dorado is mostly understood today as a mythical, lost city of gold. Originally, the term was El Hombre Dorado or El Rey Dorado, meaning ''the man of gold,'' or ''the king of gold.'' This original use referred to a ritual from Colombia in which a tribal chief would cover himself in gold dust and then wade into the lake as an offering to a goddess.
