  • Membrane Permeability - The plasma membrane is said to be selectively permeable because it is permeable to certain substances and impermeable to other substances. For example, the phospholipid bilayer is permeable to non-polar, uncharged molecules such as oxygen but impermeable to ions.
  • Diffusion - Diffusion is a random mixing of molecules or ions due to kinetic energy. Substances will spontaneously diffuse down a concentration gradient (i.e. do not require an input of energy).
  • Passive Transport - A form of transport in the cell in which no energy is expended. Molecules or ions move down a concentration gradient spontaneously.
  • Facilitated Diffusion - The passive movement of a molecule or ion down a concentration gradient via transmembrane transporter proteins embedded in the plasma membrane. The rate of facilitated diffusion is therefore limited by the number of transport proteins in the membrane.
  • Active Transport - A form of transport in which the cell expends energy to move molecules or ions against a concentration gradient via transmembrane transporter protein embedded in the membrane. Polar or charged solutes are moved in this manner.
