The primary, or P, wave has a speed of about 8.0 km/s and the secondary, or S, wave has a speed of about 4.5 km/s. A seismograph, located some distance away, records the arrival of the P wave and then, 95.7 s later, records the arrival of the S wave. Assuming that the waves travel in a straight line, how far (in terms of m) is the seismograph from the earthquake?

A seismic activity like earthquakes produces a series of waves generally known as seismic waves. These seismic waves can be broadly classified into body waves and surface waves. Body waves travel through the interior of the earth and they are pressure waves. Surface waves travel through the surface of the earth like ripples in the water surface. The body waves or the pressure waves are further classified into primary waves or P waves and secondary waves or S waves. P waves travel faster than S waves and the time delay in arrival the waves is used for locating the origin of seismic activity.
