William Howe gained notoriety during the French and Indian War (Seven Years' War), and in 1775, he was sent to reinforce British General Thomas Gage in Massachusetts during the Siege of Boston. He was named commander-in-chief of the British Army in North America following Thomas Gage's dismissal for failing to avoid the conflict. Between 1776 and 1777, he would have many successes, but he was unable to defeat Washington's Army, so he resigned from his position before operations began again in 1778.
