Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805), 1st Marquess Cornwallis, also known as the Earl of Cornwallis, was a British officer during the American Revolutionary War (or American War of Independence). He headed the British campaign through the Southern colonies and is remembered for his victories at the Battles of Camden (1780) and Guilford Courthouse (1781). He was one of several major generals in command of British military forces during the war.
