Physicists try to understand the working of our universe and the forces which govern it. Till today, physicists know about four fundamental forces in nature. These forces play a pivotal role in our lives and have different strengths and ranges.

There are four fundamental forces in nature,

  • Strong Force (Nuclear Force)
  • Electromagnetic force
  • Weak Force
  • Gravitational Force

Strong force or the nuclear force is the strongest of all the fundamental forces and it affects particles at the microscopic scale. It is a short range force and we do not experience the effect of nuclear force in our day to day lives. It is interesting to note that the size of the nucleus of an atom is also of the order of {eq}10^{-15}\ m {/eq}.

The strong force binds quarks together to result in the formation of hadrons (neutrons, protons, pions, etc.) and also keep nucleons (protons and neutrons) in the nucleus of an atom together.

In the nucleus, protons being positively charged are repelled by the electromagnetic force. Thus to account for the stability of the nucleus, an attractive force is required which can overcome this repelling force. As mentioned before, this force is the nuclear force.
