Question:
What is the IUPAC name?
![]() |
IUPAC Nomenclature:
IUPAC stands for International Union of Pure Applied Chemistry. This organization developed a standard way to name organic molecules. The longest carbon chain of the organic molecule is named based on the number of carbons using the following prefixes:
1C -meth
2C - eth
3C - pro
4C - but
5C - pent
6C - hex
7C - hept
The ending of the name indicates if the molecule contains a functional group. Substituents are also named using the prefixes and a number tells which carbon of the main chain they are attached to.
