In the periodic table, rows of elements are defined as being periods, and groups are defined as being columns. For example, group 1A of the table contains all the group 1 elements, and is the first column that appears in the table on the left side.

The table is organized in such a way that elements with similar properties appear in the same group, and it's also organized with the elements increasing in atomic number across a period.
