What is the application of photoelectric effect?

Question:

What is the application of photoelectric effect?

Discovery of Photoelectric Effect:

The phenomenon of emission of electrons from a metal surface when electromagnetic radiations fall on the surface of the metal is known as the Photoelectric effect. This effect was first observed by Hertz when he noticed a spark between the two metallic balls when high-frequency radiation was incident on them. The resulting current is called photocurrent which depends on the various factors like frequency of the radiation, intensity of incident radiation, and the potential difference between the electrodes.
