Steroid hormones can be classified into two main groups: corticosteroids (made in the adrenal cortex and include glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids) and sex steroids (made in the gonads or placenta and include androgens, estrogens, and progesterone). Steroid hormones have multiple functions in the body, such as metabolism, inflammation, immune functions, salt and water control, and development of sexual characteristics.
