North West Mounted Police:
The North West Mounted Police, or NWMP, was an armed law enforcement agency in Canada in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was established in May 1873 to police the expanding territories and settlement in Canada's Northwest. This Federal police agency provided protection to a massive increase of settlers moving into the territories, negotiated treaties and working relationships with First Nations peoples, and helped to keep secure construction of important railway connections into the West. The NWMP transitioned into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1920.
