There are three general types of rocks, sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. Igneous rocks either form under the ground or above the ground. Metamorphic rocks are formed underground. Sedimentary rocks are formed start as sediments at the surface of the Earth. The sediments get glued together either above ground or underground.
