Most medical terms are derived from the Greek or Latin languages because much of the science of medicine originated in ancient Greek and Latin speaking societies. Anatomy and physiology has its own unique language that is important to understand in order to be successful in biology classes or a career in healthcare. A medical term is divided primarily into three parts: a prefix, a root word and a suffix. A prefix is placed in front of some words, a root word is the meaning and foundation of the word and a suffix is placed at the end of some words.
