Most medical terms are derived from the Greek or Latin languages because much of the science of medicine originated in ancient Greek and Latin-speaking societies. Anatomy and physiology has its own unique language that is important to understand in order to be successful in biology classes or a career in healthcare. A medical term is divided primarily into three parts: a prefix, a root word and a suffix. A prefix is placed in front of some words, a root word is the meaning and foundation of the word and a suffix is placed at the end of some words. Often, a medical term will have what is known as a combining form where the root word combines with a vowel.
