Question:

Use directional terms to complete the sentence.

The thoracic vertebrae are _____ to the lumbar vertebrae.

Anatomic orientation

There are numerous terms used for anatomical direction. These terms include; medial, lateral, distal, proximal, posterior, anterior, inferior, etc. Terms such as "distal" mean away from or distant from point of attachment while proximal means close to point of attachment.

Answer and Explanation: 1

There are five parts of the spine. The most superior is the cervical spine. Immediately inferior to the cervical spine is the thoracic spine. Immediately inferior to the thoracic spine is the lumbar spine. Inferior to the lumbar spine is the sacrum and then the coccyx. So the thoracic spine is superior to the lumbar spine. The thoracic spine occupies the majority of the spine.
