Question:

The molecule below was spotted on a TLC plate and eluted with 1:1 ethyl acetate:methylene chloride. What would you expect the relative value of Rf to be after the elution? Explain your answer.

Thin Layer Chromatography:

In thin layer chromatography, compounds are separated and travel along the TLC plate due to their interaction with the mobile phase (solvent system). When the solvent system is non-polar, molecules interact more strongly with the TLC plate and therefore travel less distance along the TLC plate. With a very polar solvent, molecules would travel a greater distance as they interact more with the mobile phase.
