Predict the products of the following reaction and write the net ionic equation. Cu(NO3)2(aq) +...
Question:
Predict the products of the following reaction and write the net ionic equation.
{eq}Cu(NO_3)_2(aq) + H_2SO_4(aq) \to {/eq}
Net Ionic Equation :
- The net ionic equation is very useful to determine which chemical compounds are actually participating in the reaction.
- We can predict if the reaction will be possible or not between reactants with the help of this.
- The common ions present on both reactant an product side gets canceled out. These ions are known as spectator ions.
Answer and Explanation: 1
The reaction of copper nitrate with sulphuric acid undergoes a double decomposition reaction to form copper sulphate and nitric acid.
We are provided with two reactants :
{eq}\rm Cu(NO_3)_2(aq) {/eq} and {eq}\rm H_2SO_4(aq) \to CuSO_4 + 2HNO_3 {/eq}.
Ionic Equation :
{eq}\rm Cu^{+2}_{(aq)}+2NO^-_{3(aq) }+ 2H^+_{(aq)} +SO_{4(aq)}^- \to Cu^{+2}_{(aq)} +SO_{4(aq)}^- +2H^+_{(aq)} +2NO_{3(aq)}^- {/eq}
To find out the net ionic equation we have to cancel the spectator ions from the reaction. We can see in the above reaction that all the ions got canceled out. This means that the reaction of copper nitrate with sulphuric acid will not be visible reaction.
