One of the breakthroughs in genetics were the experiment carried out on pea plants by the Swiss monk Gregor Mendel. In his experiments Mendel realized that there were certain traits which showed predictable phenotypic ratios when parents of a certain type were crossed together. These kinds of traits are called Mendelian traits and they are coded for by one gene.
