Is glucose an amino acid?
Question:
Is glucose an amino acid?
Amino Acids:
Amino acids are the monomers that combine to make peptides and proteins. Amino acids have an amine group (NHtext2) at one end of the molecule and a carboxyl group (COOH) on the other end.
Terms & Definitions:
- A monomer consists of a molecule that is able to be chemically bonded to other like molecules. When multiple molecules bond together, the resulting chain is referred to as a polymer.
- These terms are easy to remember based on their prefixes: Mono- means one and poly- means many.
- A peptide is a comprised of two or more amino acids.
- A protein is comprised of amino acids chains as well. However, the chains of amino acids that make up a protein are longer than those that make up peptides.
