The carbonic acid/bicarbonate buffer is known as one of the most important buffers in the blood that maintains the pH balance in the blood. The equillibrium should be maintained and it is done by dissolving carbon dioxide with a water molecule in order to form the carbonic acid. The bicarbonate ions have a very important role in the neutralization of the acid that is done by making use of other metabolic processes.

When we hold our breath then we are at risk of respiratory acidosis because this can result in the decrease in the rate of respiration.
