Homeostasis is a balance in a living system. Organisms both large and small must maintain homeostasis as a steady-state of internal conditions, despite any changes in their environment.

Single-Celled Organisms:

  • The simplest form of life on our planet, single-celled organisms are nonetheless highly organized, with internal structures that perform specific tasks for the cell.
  • Single-celled organisms exist in three broad groups, archaea, bacteria, and single-celled eukaryotes.
  • Archaea are ancient organisms that are often able to survive in extreme environments whose temperature, acidity, salinity, or other conditions, would kill bacteria or eukaryotes.
  • Often found alone, some single-celled organisms can form colonies that grow to large sizes providing there is sufficient food and water.
