To help students become strong writers, first of all, it is necessary to have them read and analyze the writing of great masters, whether they are fiction (novelists, short-story writers, poets) or nonfiction writers (biographers, journalists, or even text-book writers) and then model their techniques and styles. On a weekly basis, students should write on a variety of topics, after the teacher provides exemplars of their own. For students to grow and not just keep writing and frequently making the same errors, it is key that the teacher provides them with meaningful feedback. Over time, students should become more confident in tackling a variety of topics, genres, or styles and thus develop their own voice and style. Getting feedback, however, is absolutely essential.

With respect to essay writing, the first step is assessing the skills the students already have and then building on these skills by teaching students how to write introductions, summaries, and thesis statements, and how to develop ideas and support them with examples and elaborations. Students should be given opportunities to write for brief and extended periods, in class and at home, on a variety of assigned and self-selected topics. Before writing, it is also important to give students chances to articulate their ideas aloud in small group or whole-class discussions.
