The atomic radii of elements in the same period have the trend of decreasing while moving from left to right of the periodic table. Also, the atomic radii of elements in the same group follows the trend of increasing while moving from top to bottom of the group.

The size of atoms increases while going the group.This can easily be explained by the fact that while going down the same group, the only thing that changes is the addition of new energy levels. Addition of a new energy level leads to the increase in the size of the atom. For example, O and S belong to the same group but O has 2p orbital as the valence orbital and S has 3p as the valence orbital. Size of 3p orbital being greater than 2p, the size of S atom is also larger than O.
