Rusting is a process by which there is a formation of an oxide type layer on many different metals. The redox reaction is taking place during a rusting process. The rusting in iron leads to the formation of the ferric oxide layer.

In the cathodic protection process, the metal which is more reactive is attached to the metal. These metals are also called sacrificial metals as they will sacrifice themselves to protect the main metal from rusting. These sacrificial metals being more reactive will oxidize faster relative to the oxidation of the main metal.
In this way, the rusting is being protected in the main metal. There are various examples of cathodic protection. For example, zinc is used as sacrificial metal on the steel parts.
