VSEPR Theory:

The valence-shell electron-pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory tries to predict the electron-pair geometry and molecular geometry of an atom. The electron-pair geometry of an atom details how the different electron groups, bonding and nonbonding, are distributed around a central atom which is an atom bonded to two or more atoms. The distribution, according to VSEPR, should be in such a way that the repulsion between these groups is minimized. The molecular geometry of a molecule, on the other hand, describes how the nuclei of the atoms bonded to the central atom are distributed giving the molecule its shape.
