Muscle Contraction

Muscle contraction occurs when the muscle fibres shorten or tighten. Muscle contraction occurs so we can move. There are 4 different types of muscle contraction:

  • Isometric: This type of contraction involves no change in length in the muscle fibres
  • Isotonic: This type of contraction involves the change in length of muscle fibres
  • Eccentric: This type of contraction lengthens the muscle fibres
  • Concentric: This type of contraction shortens the muscle fibres
