Describe the different types of metallic indicator electrodes.
Question:
Describe the different types of metallic indicator electrodes.
Metallic Indicator Electrodes:
Metallic indicator electrodes give rise to an electric potential as an outcome of redox reactions carried out on the metal surface in potentiometry. These electrodes are quite necessary in electrochemical processes.
Answer and Explanation: 1
Different types of metallic indicator electrodes
- First kind electrodes
In these electrodes, a metal rod is dipped in its metal solution and electrodes measures the ionic activity of the solution.
Example: silver electrode dipped in silver nitrate solution
- Second kind electrodes:
In these electrodes, a metal wire coated with one of its salt precipitate is used. These electrodes measure the changes in the ionic activity through the formation of the complex.
Example: silver electrode with AgCl as its salt precipitate.
- Redox electrode
In redox electrode, an inert metal such as Pt, which is in immersed in a redox solution is used.
Example: Hydrogen electrode.
