The RNA interference of RNAi is the process of stopping the messenger RNA from producing the proteins. The process includes the formation of small size RNA, also known as sRNA. This RNA is produced from the double stranded RNA (dsRNA) molecules with the help of proteins like Dicer-like proteins. These sRNA can be small interfering RNA (siRNA) or microRNA (miRNA). RNA-independent RNA polymerase causes the formation of dsRNA molecules from the ssRNA molecules, which will be converted into sRNA through Dicer-like proteins. These sRNA molecules will interact with the complementary sequence of the messenger RNA molecule and inhibit them. The sRNAs are also incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complexes (RISC), which are responsible for the cleavage of the particular RNA molecules. Argonaute proteins form this complex.

The process of RNA interference targets the RNA viruses that inject their genetic material into the plants. The viral genome will form intermediates of dsRNA molecules in the host cell, converted into the sRNA. These sRNA molecules will be cleaved by the RISC complex.
